Truly Frivolous Law Suits
Have you heard about the 'Thong Wrong' suit? That's the one brought by a lawyer out in California on behalf of a very fat lady who, while putting her (Relax Fit I guess...) thong on, was struck in the eye by some decorative ornamentation that popped off as the garment was being stretched to the max over her enormous tush.
Or, have you heard about the Judge (no less!) in our nation's capitol who sued his dry cleaners for a gazillion dollars because they lost a pair of his pants and damaged another.
And too, there are the recent seamy stories of multi-millionaire tort and class action lawyers paying bribes for cases, trying to bribe judges for fees and simply wallowing in criminal greed and avarice.
And each day, Judge Judy and Judy BillyBob and Judge Juanita and on and on roil the daytime airwaves with their dumbed down, bought and paid for stupid cases that 'tried' in their 'alleged' courtrooms.
And each day, those same daytime airwaves are filled with ad after ad after ad for lawyers who promise everything, expect nothing, play make believe with the world and pander slavishly.
All of this and more is really, really hurting our beloved, beautiful, wonderful civil justice system. It's being cheapened, trashed and perverted. It makes me very sad, very dismayed, very resigned.
And as I'm in my 33rd year of being a lawyer, I have a sense of helplessness over this stuff.
But as the wise man said long, long ago, t'is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.
So, y'all who get this, please remember that almost all of us lawyers do our work because we love it and because we want to help people. We're hardworking, smart and honorable. We treasure our Constitution. We despise the sorts of nonsense and trash described above. We'll keep working no matter what and our work will help our communities and nation, no matter what.
There is no glory for most of us. Only the reward of doing honest, heartfelt work that matters in the lives of those who need us, who would have no voice were it not for our efforts.
